A server or server is a computer system used to store, share, and provide information based on client requests.
Servers are specially designed to store and transmit data to computers or users according to their requirements in any environment and are usually created to serve specific tasks. The server can be set up in a local area network or the internet.
To ensure that requests from clients always receive a response, servers must be up and running around the clock and rarely shut down (when there is a problem or an upgrade).
Typically, networks use one or more servers to perform a specific task or program. The most widely known server is the webserver, where web pages are stored and accessed through the internet from a client computer. For example, a web browser.
However, there are many different types of servers, including some common ones such as:
Web server is widely known by everyone. It is used to store data related to web pages. All web browsers connect to web servers to access information contained on web pages. This type of server is used for various purposes, from storing simple documents to image and video files to cloud storage or online storage.
This type of server is used to send and receive emails. It uses software to download the mail to the computer, then uses the SMTP server to send the mail back through the email server.
File Transfer Protocol, roughly translated as the file transfer protocol, is a type of server that supports downloading or storing files remotely. The computer uses FTP client software to communicate with these servers. They are useful for moving or downloading data from anywhere on the internet.
DNS or Domain Name Server is an online service used to locate hosting based on a specific domain name.
The domain name is basically the name of your website. Domain names are used instead of IP addresses for their recall. You can change the IP address without changing the domain name, just point the domain name to the new IP address.
Convert your computer into a server
All computers, from desktops to laptops, can act as a server. For example, you can install an FTP server program on your computer to share files between other users.
While it’s possible to have your computer act as a server, keep the following in mind:
- The computer and server software needs to be running at all times to be accessible.
- When the computer acts as the server, the machine resources such as RAM, CPU, bandwidth will be used by the users connecting to your machine.
- Since someone else can access your computer, there is a chance that you could be attacked by hackers.
- If the server’s service becomes popular, your computer may not have enough resources to handle the entire user request.
