If what you do with CCleaner is just let it automatically clean up the computer system, and think that is the end of CCleaner’s task, you are wrong. You can damage important files and make your computer less efficient if CCleaner is not used properly.
The CCleaner software will probably be easy for everyone – open it up and hit the Run button. But there are still many things that you still haven’t discovered about CCleaner that this article covers.
What is CCleaner?
CCleaner is a software program commonly used to delete unwanted files and clean up invalid Windows registry information on computers. This utility helps to improve computer performance, limiting any possible system errors.
CCleaner software targets files that have been removed but remain in the Internet browser or on the Toolbars toolbar, for example Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Windows Media Player and some other computer programs. It also cleans up browsing history, cookies, log files, auto form history and other unnecessary files.
CCleaner supports Windows 10, 8.1, 7 XP and Vista operating systems with browsers including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari. And note that, the main feature of CCleaner is to erase data from your system, so be careful during manipulation, you may not be able to recover your data if you delete it by mistake.
How To Use CCleaner Windows 10
Choose what to delete on CCleaner
With default settings, CCleaner will clean the recycle bin, cache, browsing history… However, it would help if you considered clearing the web browser’s cache, thanks to the cache storage on the computer will help us speed up surfing in the future. When visiting a website, the page load speed will be faster if the image is already cached on the computer. Clearing the cache will increase storage space and improve your browser’s security more if you are concerned about this, but it will also slow down your surfing speed.
Clearing the Thumbnail cache in Windows Explorer will also slow down your computer – if you’re trying to open a folder with lots of pictures, it will take some time for the system to regenerate the cache for those pictures. Deleting the Thumbnail cache helps reduce storage space for the computer, but it will take time to recreate the cache for them.
In addition, CCleaner will also automatically remove files in your recently used applications, but they do not take up much space. So it’s best not to tick any software in the Applications tab.
Manage Cookies on your computer with CCleaner
By default, CCleaner will clean all cookies on your computer, but it is always necessary to keep cookies if you visit a website often. To mark important cookies, you need to use the Cookies feature in the Options section.
CCleaner also supports users with the Intelligent Scan feature – automatically scans Cookies of reputable websites and whitelists them including Google, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail…
You’ll probably want to know how to add some website cookies to the whitelist. For example, to add cookies of Ticswipe, search for cookies of ticswipe.com in the list on the left, and click the arrow button to add ticswipe.com to the whitelist. Then the cookies of canhrau.com when you visit the website are still stored on your computer, no matter how many times you delete the cookies with CCleaner.
Manage applications that open automatically at computer startup
The Startup feature in CCleaner will help users disable any applications that automatically turn on when starting the computer. To speed up the computer startup, turning off the software automatically starts with Windows is extremely important, but you should Disable instead of Delete. Because when Disable, we can turn it back on if we want.
Restrict registry cleaning
CCleaner provides users with a Registry cleaning feature, but I recommend not using this feature. Because the Windows Registry contains hundreds of thousands of values and variables; Deleting them will not improve your computer’s speed. Also, deleting the Registry can affect important and necessary Registry values, so you shouldn’t risk it in exchange for a bit of your computer’s speed.
However, if you still want to clean the Registry with CCleaner, make sure you back up the changes to the Registry. With a backup, it’s easier to restore the Registry if you run into any problems.
Clean up hard drive completely with CCleaner
When Windows or any other system application deletes a file, the file has not been completely deleted. Instead, the path to that file is deleted and the system allows us to store other content in that location, this is called hard drive fragmentation. So data recovery applications like Recuva can scan and recover them. CCleaner with Drive Wiper feature will help you wipe the root and protect you from data recovery software.
If there are too old files and you don’t need to recover them, deleting them is something you should start doing now. To clean the hard drive completely, check the Wipe Free Space box in the Advanced section. With this option, it will take more time for CCleaner to clean up your system.
Secure Deletion mode
Everything you delete will be safe and effective with this feature, similar to other disk cleaning applications. Remember that this feature will slow down your deletion process compared to normal – this is why the system does not allow this feature to be used by default. If you are concerned about security, enable this feature by selecting Options -> Settings and ticking “Secure file deletion (Slower)“.
Include Custom Files features
Suppose you install software and it is not in CCleaner’s application list or has a temporary folder that you want to delete regularly. In that case, you can customize any folder or file on CCleaner. So CCleaner will delete all the customizations you want when you run the software.
To add a folder or file, select Option and select Include. And be careful when using this feature; you may add the wrong and important files or folders and delete them.
Next, you need to tick the “Custom Files and Folders” box before running CCleaner.
Exclude Files feature
Similar to above, if CCleaner deletes things you don’t want, you can add them to the Exclude exclusion list in the Options settings. We can remove drives, folders, files or registry, and especially you can exclude by file extension (file extension).
Manage all installed apps
The CCleaner tool also includes a Windows-like Uninstaller feature, you can also filter and remove any apps you don’t use. However, CCleaner has improved some features such as you can rename, and remove applications from the list to no longer be mistakenly deleted. And the above changes will also directly affect the Uninstall feature on Control Panel.
Above is an article that briefly introduces what is CCleaner software and guides on using CCleaner most effectively. Thank you all for following the article.
