You want to move the applications and programs installed on your computer to another drive to free up the main drive but don’t know-how. Below FPTShop will guide you on how to do it.
The process you need to take depends on what you want to move to the other drive, whether it’s a native Windows 10 app or a third-party program.
How To Move Installed Programs To Another Drive
This method will only work for apps you installed from the Microsoft Store.
Step 1: Press the Windows + I key combination to open the Settings => Apps application.
Step 2: Click Apps & features in the left pane. In the right pane will be a list of all the applications and programs installed on the system.
Step 3: Scroll to the application you want to move, click on it, and press the Move button.
Step 4: Select the new drive from the drop-down menu, then click the Move button again.
You can repeat this process if you want to move the application back or to another drive.
If the Move button is grayed out, it means the Windows 10 app cannot be moved. If you see the Modify button, it is a traditional desktop program and needs to follow the method below.
How to move desktop programs to another drive
Before doing this, make sure to create a Windows 10 restore point so that you can restore it if there’s a problem with moving programs.
Then download and install a program called Steam Mover. While this software is designed to move Steam games between drives, it will practically work on any program.
Note: To transfer existing installed programs on the computer, any drive you want to use with this program must be in NTFS format. The way to check is as follows:
Press Windows key + E to open This PC, then right-click the drive to check and select Properties. In the File system section, you can see if it is an NTFS drive format or not.
If yes, you can safely use Steam Mover to move your programs from one drive to another:
Step 1: Activate Steam Mover.
Step 2: Next to the Steams Apps Common Folder item in the left pane, click the three-dot button to select the folder path on the drive containing the program to be moved (for example, Program Files on drive C).
Step 3: Next to Alternative Folder, click the three-dot button to select the path to the drive and folder you want to move the program to.
Step 4: Click to select the program from the list you want to move. You can select multiple programs by holding Ctrl while clicking.
Step 5: When ready to move, click the right arrow button at the bottom to get started. Command Prompt will open and handle the migration.
Step 6: When done, you will see the new folder path next to the program in the Junction Point column.

Step 2: Click on the Storage item in the left pane. Under More storage settings in the right pane, click the Change where new content is saved link.
