What is Hibernate mode?

Hibernate mode is a shutdown mode of the computer in the Windows operating system. Distinguishing from the computer’s Sleep and Shutdown modes, the computer will shut down completely and not consume power when choosing this model. Most importantly, all apps, files, and videos will remain when used again.

Hibernate is a hibernation state in which Windows saves the current active state and turns itself off to no longer need to use power. To put it simply, when you hibernate your computer, the system will take a snapshot of the files and applications you are using. And quickly save it to your hard drive before shutdown. Therefore, the next time the PC is rebooted, all of the files and programs will be restored to the state they were in before hibernating.

The reason is that when using Hibernate mode, the computer’s activity log is stored on the computer’s HDD or SSD, not in RAM like in sleep mode. As soon as you use it again, all data is quickly moved from your computer’s hard drive to RAM and you can get on with your unfinished work in no time.

Well, it seems Hibernate mode is a perfect solution when you don’t need to use your PC for a short period. But why would users want to turn off hibernation in Windows 10? Please follow the next part of the article.

Why would you want to disable hibernation in Windows 10?

When your computer goes into hibernation, it creates a hibernation file, takes up a few GB or even more and stores it on the computer’s hard drive. More specifically, this hibernation file can take up about 75% of the available RAM on your computer. For example, if your PC has 8GB, the hiberfil.sys file will take up about 6GB of memory space. And if you have all 16GB of RAM on your PC, the hiberfil.sys file will take up to 12GB.

This hibernation file can be deleted, but Windows operating system will recreate it too (unless Hibernate Windows 10 mode has been disabled). And that is the reason why the vast majority of Windows 10 users want to turn off hibernation on Windows 10.

And if you want to free up space on your computer’s hard drive, turn off Hibernate on your computer.

In this article, I will mainly guide you on how to How To Turn Off Hibernate Windows 10. In case if you want to enable hibernation in Windows 10, you can apply the opposite method.

  • Sleep mode and Hibernate have been disabled in BIOS: To fix this problem, please restart your computer and go to BIOS mode right away to re-enable this feature.
  • You only see Sleep mode but not Hibernate: Your computer may have activated Hybrid Sleep mode to replace Hibernate feature.
