The HEIC image format is great for saving space on your device’s hard drive, but it’s far from optimal to work with. You need to edit iPhone photos on a device or website that does not support this format, you will need to convert to another format to continue. Below Ticswipe will guide you on how to convert HEIC images of iPhone/iPad to the traditional JPG format on Mac products.
What is the HEIC format?
HEIC is a compressed image format that Apple started using as the default image format from iOS 11. If your iPhone or iPad is running iOS 11 or later, it will save your captured images in the HEIC format. And since this is a proprietary format from Apple, you won’t find much support for it on devices from other manufacturers. This is the main reason you need to convert images from HEIC format to more widely used formats, JPG being an example.
Use Preview to convert HEIC to JPG
The simplest and most common way to change HEIC to JPG on macOS is to use Preview. This is not only a normal image and video file viewer but also helps you to convert image formats.
Step 1: Right-click your HEIC-formatted image and select Open with. Select Preview. If the Preview is already set to default, just double-click to open the image.
Step 2: When the Preview is open, drag the mouse over the menu bar in the upper left corner, select File, and select Export.
Step 3: At this point, an information panel will appear, select the desired image format: JPG, PNG, etc. then drag the slider to adjust the quality (Quality) for the destination file. Next, select the folder where you want to save the image and then click Save. Preview will then format itself and save it to a folder of your choice.
Use the Photos app on Mac to convert formats
If you often use iCloud to sync between Mac and iPhone/iPad, HEIC photos on iPhone/iPad can be quickly synced via Mac in the Photos app. If the HEIC images you need are already stored in this app, you can change their format right here.
Step 1: Select the image to be transferred in the application (multiple images can be selected), then drag the mouse on the menu bar in the left corner select File, click Export.
Step 2: Select an image format (Format) from the drop-down menu, then select Export. Then choose the folder to store the image.
Use a free 3rd party App to convert formats
In addition to the above two methods available on Mac, other applications allow you to convert from HEIC to JPG. You can download a free app on the AppStore called iMazing HEIC Converter. This application will allow you to convert images in an extremely simple way.
Step 1: Download and install the iMazing HEIC Converter app
Step 2: Launch the app and drag the HEIC image files to the interface inside the app
Step 3: From the Format section, select JPEG or any other format you want, tick Keep EXIF data if you want to keep the whole file in its original format. Then select the image quality and then click Convert.
Step 4: Select the folder where you want to save your converted image.
